The funeral took place at St Mary’s Church, Hartlebury, on Wednesday, of Pilot Officer Walter Fowler Smith, of “Dornford,” Hartlebury, who was killed on Friday last in an aeroplane accident on the East Coast.
Pilot Officer Smith, who was known locally as “Jock,” was 20 years of age. He joined the R.A.F. last February, and had only recently finished his training.
Educated at Hartlebury Grammar School, he was a popular figure, and was a very good cricketer. He had played hockey for Worcestershire.
The funeral was a quiet, simple ceremony, and there were few mourners. Members of the family attending were the mother, Mrs Smith (a widow); brother, Mr Sandy Smith; uncle, Mr G. R. Gabb; and godfather, Mr Newman, with Mrs Newman.
The service was conducted by the Rev. T.B. Wilson.
