Further Information About FLETCHER Albert

Appears in the Worcester/Worcestershire Roll of Honour Book for army casualties located in Worcester Cathedral.

Albert Fletcher lived at ‘The Nurseries’ in Heath Street, Stourbridge, and worked in his uncle’s firm, W.A. Elt and Son.  He enlisted in 1917 and was posted to the 2nd 4th Battalion of the Royal Berkshire Regiment in the 61st Division.  They were involved in the Third Battle of Ypres in 1917, and in early 1918 were sent to the front line near St. Quentin. Here they faced the first great German Spring offensive which opened on the 21st March. The Berkshires were greatly outnumbered and fell back immediately into defensive redoubts.  Many fought bravely to the end and Private Albert Fletcher was one of the many who died.  He is also commemorated on the St. Thomas’s church and Methodist church, Stourbridge memorials.
