FAWKES Joseph Charles

Kidderminster Times, 23rd October 1915:
Private Joseph Charles Fawkes, 9667, 2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment. Letter to Miss Elsie Gould, 7 Dolday, Worcester from Sergeant Sheppard informing her that Private Joseph Fawkes had been shot dead through the neck on 26th September 1915.

Berrow’s Worcester Journal, Saturday 15th October 1915:
“Soldier’s Farewell to Sweetheart”
Miss Elsie Gould of 7 Dolday, Worcester, has received a letter from Sergeant H. Sheppard of the 2nd Worcestershires informing her of the death of her lover, Private J.C. Fawkes 9667 in battle.
Sgt Sheppard writes: “private Fawkes was killed in action during the last great battle. He was shot by a bullet passing through his neck. He was liked by the whole platoon. I am enclosing a last letter which he wrote to you.” The letter from Private J.C. Fawkes 9667 reads: “My own darling, I am writing these few lines to you, and when you get this letter you will know, dear, that I am gone, but you will also know that I died loving you with all my heart and that I was true to you to the last, but I love to do my duty and, thank God, I died a-doing it. Now, goodbye dear; for ever and ever, and by God’s grace we shall meet again in Heaven, your loving sweetheart and soldier, Joe. I write this letter before going into the trenches again.
For in the midst of life we are on death”.

Joseph Fawkes has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on Loos Memorial.
