Further Information About EVANS Leslie

Leslie Evans was born at Quarry Cottage, Kinlet Road, the son of Walter and Agnes Evans. Pre 1939 he lived at Ranters Bank, Far Forest, Rock. Leslie was lost at sea when his submarine was hit by a depth charge dropped by the Italian Destroyer Fortunale off the coast of Naples. Medals awarded:- 1939 – 45 Star, Atlantic Star.

Submarine P222 sailed from Gibraltar on 30th November 1942 for a patrol off Naples. Messages were received from her on 7th December after which date nothing further was heard from the submarine. When she failed to arrive in Algiers on her due date of 21st December, the Italians claimed to have sunk a submarine in the Bay of Naples on 12th December. This was never officially confirmed.
