John Evans was attested as Private 9556, in the Worcestershire Regiment on 9th September 1914 in Worcester. On his attestation paper he stated he was born in the Parish of St Mary’s, Kidderminster, he gave his age as 36 years and his occupation as a labourer. He had previously served 8 years with the colours and 8 years as a reservist. John was 5 feet 6¼ inches tall with a fresh complexion, grey eyes and sandy hair. His service records state he was the son of William and Mary Evans, he had 2 older brothers and an older sister and he married Elizabeth Emma Durose at St George’s Church, Kidderminster on 7th October 1905. Elizabeth was resident at 2 Mount Pleasant, Kidderminster with their 4 daughters and later at 4 Duke Street, Kidderminster. John was posted to France on 29th November 1914. He was killed in action at Lindenhoek while serving with the British Expeditionary Force in France.
