Further Information About EDWARDS George

George Edwards was born in Bromsgrove in 1883 and was the son of William and Mary Edwards. The family lived in Hill Top in 1891 and No 24 Tar? Square in 1901. William was a general labourer in 1891 but was a salt labourer by 1901. Mary was a nail maker. George was the 3rd of 7 children. Joseph was the eldest and became a wagoner, then came Susanna who became a cook, then there was George, a bricklayer’s labourer, then William, a grocer’s porter, then Alfred, an errand boy, then Maria and Mary.

On 31st January 1903, George married Mary Jane Stokes and in 1911 they were living in Millfields, Bromsgrove with their four children: Joseph aged 7, Florence Lilian aged 6, George aged 4 and Percy aged 1.

George joined the Worcestershire Regiment 3rd Battalion and arrived in France on 12th May, 1915. He was killed in action aged 36 on the Western Front on 25th May, 1916.

Mrs Edwards of Millfields, Bromsgrove has been notified this week that her husband Private George Edwards, Worcestershire Regiment was killed in action on May 25th. Private Edwards, who was 33 years of age, enlisted in December 1914 and was previously a bricklayer’s labourer in the employment of Mr F. Lacey, Rock Hill.  He had been on active service for fourteen months.  He leaves a widow and four children.
