Walter Eastbury was born in Blockley in 1898, the seventh of twelve children. His father Oliver was an agricultural worker. Walter was at home in Blockley in 1911, shown as a schoolboy on the census. His personal military documents have not survived but he did not see overseas service until 1916 as he was not awarded 1915 campaign star. His first service number is valid for enlistment in mid-1915, and he was thus a volunteer. He served with the 8th Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment.
