William Dwight sailed from Liverpool in 1913 on the Empress of Britain and arrived in Quebec, Canada on 4th July 1913. His entry on the inbound Canadian passenger list reveals that he was aged 21, single, able to read and write and was intending to reside permanently in Canada. His intended destination was Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan where he was taking employment as a farm hand. He had previously spent 3 years from 1910 working on a farm in England.
William enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on 18th January 1916 at Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada. On his attestation form he gave his date of birth as 4th September 1891 in Martley, Worcestershire, England and his present address as 63 Stadacona St. W. Moose Jaw. He gave his occupation as a Storekeeper and his next of kin as his mother, Mrs Elizabeth Parry, Yew Tree Farm, Rashwood, Droitwich, Worcestershire, England. William stated he had previously served 18 months with the 60th rifles. He was 5ft 7 inches tall with a fair complexion, grey eyes light brown hair and a light complexion.
