RAF GR-1Tornado, ZD718, No. 14 Squadron crashes in the Saudi desert on a training mission
Pilot: Flt. Lt. Kieran Duffy (KIA)
B/N: Flt. LT. Norman Dent (KIA)
Aircraft was part of a four ship that planned a long-range sortie that included low-level work down to 100 ft above ground level. The aircraft were configured with large tanks and outboard stores. Number three aircraft aborted so the formation was using the missing man formation. The weather during the low level mission was excellent, sun high at 8 o’clock. Towards the end of the low level leg, with No. 4 aircraft flying forty seconds behind the lead pair, the No. 2 aircraft looked back and saw smoke. Upon going back, a trail of wreckage was found.
