Further Information About DOWLER John

The birth of John Dowler is registered in the June Quarter 1891 under the Birmingham Registration District.  It is not known who his parents are as he appears on both the 1901 and 1911 census living with his grandparents, William and Selina Dowler.  On the 1901 census they reside in Tolladine Road, Worcester but by the 1911 census Selina is a widow and lives at 47 Mayfield Road, Worcester with her son James aged 33 and John who is recorded as his nephew.  On both censuses John is recorded as an imbecile from birth so it is possible that he was not enlisted into the Worcestershire Regiment until after conscription was introduced.  He was killed in action in France on 7th March 1917.  His medal index card records his grandmother, Mrs Selina Dowler, 47 Mayfield Road, Worcester being sent his Victory Medal and British War Medal on 29th June 1920.
