Awarded Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) and Military Cross (M.C.) Proceeded overseas in 1914.
Joseph Dent was born in 1889. He attended Bromsgrove School from 1904 to 1907. After military training at Sandhurst, he was gazetted to the South Staffordshire Regiment, crossing to France with them in August 1914. He took part in the battle of the Aisne and the first battle of Ypres and was awarded the D.S.O. for daring scouting work which obtained valuable information. He was also mentioned in despatches in November when he was home recovering from a wound. In April 1915 Joseph was promoted to Captain and in October of the same year he was transferred to staff work. In July 1916 he was awarded the Military Cross and in the New Year Honours List he was promoted to Brevet-Major. On 11th April 1917 Joseph Dent and a companion were having tea when a shell demolished the building they were in, killing them both.
