Further Information About DAWES Robert Davis

Robert Dawes lived at Lye and enlisted in the Royal Navy. He was posted to HMS President III at Dedworth Manor, Eton, and was trained to serve in DEMS. These were the defensively equipped merchant ships that were so important for bringing in both the war material and the food necessary for Britain’s survival. He served during the Battle of the Atlantic as convoys and German U-boats battled for supremacy across the ocean.

HMS President III was a shore establishment. Based initially in Bristol and then in Windsor, it was the headquarters and accounting base for personnel on Defensively Armed Merchant Ships.

On 30th October 1942 Robert Dawes was on board the troopship MV Doumer when she was hit by a torpedo fired from U-604 at 21. 29 hours 150 miles north of Madeira. Of the 345 service personnel and crew on board, 259 lost their lives, including Robert Dawes, 85 were rescued by SS Alaska.

Robert Dawes has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
