DAVIS Walter

Formerly of the Royal Navy.

Walter, who was born on the 24th December 1870, was one of seven children born to Edward & Martha Davis (née Harris) who were married at Broadway on the 4th May 1854.

Walter married Clara Ritchings at St. Peters, Worcester on the 9th July 1896 and they had four children. Walter was serving in the Navy at Portland, where the bans for the marriage were read in Portland’s church. During the 1911 census Walter was living in Bengeworth, Evesham and was then an Insurance Agent.

Evesham Journal, 22nd February 1919:
EVESHAM MAN’S DEATH
We regret to record the death of Pte. W. Davis of the Royal Marine Labour Corps, who wife lives at 42, King’s-road, Evesham, which occurred on January 28. Pte. Davis was 48 years of age, and was formerly employed in Evesham. He had had 12 years’ service in the Royal Navy. He re-enlisted on February 2, 1915, and served in the North Sea for 2½years, and was later transferred to the Royal Marine Labour Corps. He was home on leave for fourteen days at the commencement of the year, and returned on January 17, when he was in perfect health. He seems to have caught a severe chill on the return, and on January 27 Mrs. Davis received a telegram stating that her husband was seriously ill, and had been admitted to hospital at Dieppe. The next day she had another telegram saying that he was dangerously ill, and on the 29th a third with the information that he had passed away. The cause of death was bronchial pneumonia. Mrs. Davis has received letters from the Matron of the hospital and the Chaplains. She has also received the official notification of her husband’s death and the King’s sympathetic message. The two sons of the late Pte. Davis are serving, Harold in the Royal Navy, and Frank, who has been wounded, in the Royal Warwick’s.
