Henry Darkes was a member of the 1st Volunteer Battalion Worcestershire Regiment when he enlisted as Private 6723 in the 1st Battalion Worcestershire Regiment at Kidderminster on 10th January 1900. He was born in Bewdley, Worcestershire, gave his age as 24 years 7 months and his occupation as a painter. His next of kin was his father, Thomas Darkes, 40 Lax Lane, Bewdley. Henry was 5 feet 6 inches tall with a fresh complexion, grey eyes and brown hair. He was posted to South Africa on 23rd February 1900, returned home on 10th June 1901 and was discharged 12th June 1901 after 1 year 154 days, services no longer required on returning from South Africa.
