Further Information About DAKIN George Samuel
Service number given as 10853 on Soldiers Died in the Great War. Medal index card confirms as 108553.
George Dakin was born in Wollaston, the son of William and Sarah Dakin of 2 Firmstone Street, Wollaston. He enlisted in the Devonshire Regiment but was later transferred to the 9th Battalion of the Machine Gun Corps. He was killed in action during the German Spring offensives during the final German attack in the Ypres sector. On the 9th April the German forces attacked over the river Lys and forced the British into retreat. The 9th Division came into the front line to halt the enemy advance towards Kemmel Hill. The German impetus slowly faded at this point but the British casualties were heavy. Among those who were killed on the 25th April 1918 was Private George Dakin. He was 19 years of age.
George Dakin has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on Tyne Cot Memorial.
