HMS Eclipse was an E-Class Destroyer.  In October 1943 she was redeployed to reinforce naval support in the Aegean. On 23rd October 1943 she set sail for Leros having embarked troops of the Royal East Kent Regiment to reinforce the garrison on the island. At 05.00 on 24th October the ship hit a German mine East of Kalymnos, Greece.  The resulting internal explosions and fires caused the ship to break in two before sinking within 5 minutes of the impact.  119 of the ship’s crew and 134 troops lost their lives.

Peter Cuthbertson has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on Plymouth Naval Memorial.
