William Crumpton had originally enlisted in the army on 4th September 1914 but his earlier service papers do not appear to have survived. He re-attested as Private 18395, King’s Shropshire Light Infantry on 21st June 1915 at Eastbourne. On his attestation form he gave his place of birth as Dudley, his age as 27 years 1 month and his occupation as a Striker. His next of kin was his mother, Mrs Phyllis Crumpton, 46 Attwood Place, Hawne, Halesowen, Birmingham. William was discharged as medically unfit due to tuberculosis on 9th July 1915. A short memorandum dated 4th May 1916 records him as ‘Dead’.
The death of William Crumpton aged 28 is registered in the September Quarter 1915 under the Stourbridge Registration District.
