Frederick Cross was born on 7th March 1911 in Campden, Gloucestershire. His mother Ellen died in 1918 and his father Thomas 4 years later in 1922. Frederick enlisted as Private 5249458, Worcestershire Regiment on the 10th October 1932 at Norton Barracks, Worcester. He was 5 feet 4 inches tall with blue eyes, brown hair and a fresh complexion. Frederick served 7 years with the colours, 5 years as a Reservist with a tour of overseas duty in Shanghai and Tientsin, China and Sialkot and Rawalpindi, India followed by Home Service. As a Reservist he was recalled at the outbreak of the war and posted to an operational and refresher training unit.
On the 16th September 1939 he married Alice Mary Green at the Methodist Chapel, High Street, Broadway. The couple had a son, Frederick John Cross, born 21st August 1940 who sadly died two days later on the 23rd August 1940. A second son, Peter Frank Thomas Cross was born on the 9th May 1942.
Promoted to Lance Corporal and later Corporal, Frederick remained on Home service, reverting back to a Private at his own request in 1943. He embarked for North West Europe in 1944 and was killed in action at Berjou, Orne, Normandy on the 16th August 1944.
There appears to be no record of Frederick Cross on the 1939 register but his wife Alice, born 2nd January 1912, was resident in Broadway.
