John Cranmore was born on 13th October 1899 in Ipsley, Warwickshire. He enlisted in the Royal Naval Air Service as Air Mechanic 2nd Class on 18th October 1917 for the duration of hostilities. John was 5ft 5 inches tall with brown hair, blue eyes and a fresh complexion. He gave his occupation as a motor mechanic. John served briefly at the shore based naval establishment, President II at Crystal Palace before moving to Cranwell where he remained until March 1918. On 1st April 1918 he transferred to the newly formed Royal Air Force and was posted to East Fortune in Scotland. His RAF records give his next of kin as his father, William James Cranmore, 11 Victoria Road, Harborne, Birmingham. John was posted missing, presumed drowned on 22nd June 1918.
