A letter from the British Legion, Badsey, Aldington & Wickhamford, Almenzora, Wickhamford Rd, Badsey, nr Evesham, no date, can be found within war records held at Worcestershire Archives requesting that Walter L. Cook, Royal Navy be added to the county roll of honour.
HMS Courageous was originally a battle cruiser. S he was converted into an aircraft carrier between 1924 and 1928. The Courageous was part of a convoy on anti-submarine patrol in the Western Approaches, south west of Ireland on the evening of 17th September 1939 when she was hit by torpedoes from U-29 at 19.40. The ship sank in less than 15 minutes with the loss of over 500 lives and was the first U-boat offensive against the Royal Navy.
