George Collins enlisted for the duration of the war as a Rifleman in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps on 30th November 1914 at Kidderminster, Service No 7818. On his attestation paper he gave his age as 29 years and 10 months, his occupation as a Carter, his residence as Belbroughton, Worcestershire and his next of kin as his wife, Minnie Collins, Belbroughton, Worcester.  George was 5 feet 5½ inches tall. The couple had two children, William Henry Howarth Collins born 20th February 1912 and Marjorie Ellen Collins, born 9th May 1914. George was posted home after being wounded in May 1915, returning to the front in December 1915. He was wounded again in May 1916, returned to duty in June 1916 and was posted missing on 24th August 1916. He was confirmed as killed in action on 17th February 1917. By 1919 Minnie had remarried (surname now Mogg) and she resided at Hurst Cottage, Broomhill, Belbroughton nr Stourbridge.

The following report appears in the Bromsgrove Weekly Messenger, 17th March 1917:
Rifleman George H. Collins of Belbroughton. Killed in action 24th August 1916. Enlisted in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps on 15th November 1914 and was drafted to the British Expeditionary Force. He was wounded on 9th May 1915 and afterwards on 11th May 1916. Prior to enlistment he was employed by Messrs. Wilson, grocers of Belbroughton. At the time of enlistment, three others from the neighbourhood went with Collins to join the Royal Rifles, now just one survives, T. Reynolds of Hartle.

George Collins has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on Thiepval Memorial.
