Further Information About CLEWER Charles

Charles Clewer was born in Hanley Childe, Tenbury Wells, Worcestershire and resided in Baughton, Earls Croome, Severn Stoke. The 1911 census shows him as married and working as a waggoner on a farm, whilst residing at Wichenford. He enlisted in Worcester and first entered a theatre of war in France on 15th July 1915. Charles was killed in the area of Messines Ridge, Belgium, on the first day of the 1918 German offensive in that area. He was awarded a 1914/15 Star, a British War Medal and a Victory Medal.

The following report appears in the Upton on Severn News, 11th May 1918:
Mrs Clewer, Baughton, Earl’s Croome, has received official intimation that her husband, Pte. C. Clewer, of the Worcesters, was killed in action on April 10th. Pte. Clewer joined the colours in February 1915.
