William Cleveley was born on 8th April 1899, the son of Edward Cleveley. He attended Badsey Council School from 1st August 1906, it is not known when he left the school. The Badsey Parish Magazine of October 1916 records that he had been wounded two months previously and was now convalescing at Shurland, Kent. His death is reported in the January 1918 edition of the magazine with additional information. He enlisted early in the war when he was just 15 years old, went to France in January 1916, narrowly escaped death after being buried by a shell and was wounded during the fighting on the Somme in August 1916. An operation was required but previous health problems combined with the seriousness of his wounds led to his death at Horton War Hospital, Epsom on 31st December 1917. He was buried in the churchyard at Badsey on 4th January 1918 and a report of his funeral is given in the February 1918 edition of the parish magazine.
