Arthur Clarke was born in Worcester in 1884, the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Clarke. On the 1891 census Arthur is residing in Fish Street, Worcester with his grandfather, Joseph Clark(e) as the head of the household, his mother Elizabeth, daughter of Joseph aged 35 and single and his older sister Elizabeth who was aged 10. In 1895 Arthur’s mother married George Charles Morris in Worcester and on the 1901 census the family comprising of George, Elizabeth, Arthur and two step brothers are residing in Astwood Road. Arthur, aged 16, is recorded as working as a blacksmith. George, Elizabeth, Arthur and his step brother Charles reside at 116 Astwood Road on the 1911 census when Arthur is employed as a fitter’s mate. Arthur enlisted in the Worcestershire Regiment as a Private in August 1914, rising to the rank of Corporal before he died of wounds on 28th July 1916.
