Charles Colby Child attended Worcester Royal Grammar School from 1930 to 1936. His father, Daniel, was a wealthy American chain store owner from Miami and Charles spoke with an American accent. He won a Worcester County Council Scholarship to the School and during his time there he lodged at 17 Albany Terrace, Worcester with the Lownes family. He was known by his second name, Colby, whilst at school. When he lft school, he enlisted in the Royal Air Force.
On 12th May 1940 Blenheim aircraft from 139 squadron based at Plivot, near Rheims, set out to bomb the bridges over the Meuse and Albert Canal at Maastricht in an attempt to stop the German advance into Belgium. The aircraft were attacked by thirty German ME 110 fighter aircraft and of the nine Blenheims that left Plivot only two returned.
