Malvern News, 8th July 1916:
Mrs Chidgey of Hospital Bank has been notified by the War Office of the death of her son Pte C. Chidgey, Gloucestershire Regiment. After being invalided home from Gallipoli last December, he went to another war zone some time ago. A letter received from one of his comrades state he was in hospital suffering from blood poisoning.

The following information has been researched by and is courtesy of Brian Hill:
Charles Chidgey was a son of Albert Henry and Mary Ann Chidgey. He had four sisters and two brothers, one of which was his twin, Maurice Richard Chidgey. The family lived at Hospital Bank, Newtown, Malvern Link. In 1911 Charles was an Apprentice Brick Layer.

Charles died at the Basra Infectious Diseases Hospital, Mesopotamia.

Seventh Gloucesters landed in Gallipoli in July 1915, and were sent to Mesopotamia in February1916. There were large amounts of sickness and disease amongst British and Indian Soldiers in Mesopotamia, so that in 1916 the Medical Services were still struggling to catch with the numbers involved. The provision of hospitals in the Basra area was handicapped by frequent floods, but it was clear that a specialist infectious diseases hospital was needed. This was provided by March 1916, staffed by the RAMC.
