William Charlesworth attended Bromsgrove School from 1896 to 1899. After leaving Magdalene College, Cambridge, he joined the family colliery firm but a few years later retired, travelling widely and shooting big game in East Africa. He volunteered immediately the war broke out and was attached to the R.F.C. Later he was transferred to the K.O.Y.L.I. where he was rapidly promoted. In the heavy fighting round Ypres, August 1915 he was severely wounded and shortly after his return to the Front he was again in hospital. He met his end while leading two companies to a special attack.
