Joseph Charbonneau enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on 10th February 1941 at Ottawa, Ontario. On his attestation paper he gave his date of birth as 13th April 1918 at Calabrogie, Ontario, his parents as George and Annie Charbonneau nee Belanger. George was born in Arnprior, Ontario and was a grocer and chef. Annie was born in Calabrogie, Ontario. At the time of his attestation Joseph and his parents were resident in Calabrogie, Ontario, Canada. Joseph was employed as a Labourer. His service records list the particulars of his education, his employment prior to joining the Royal Canadian Air Force and a number of sports that he enjoyed participating in. Joseph was 5 feet 10 inches tall with blue eyes, light brown hair and a medium complexion.
On 31st March 1941 Joseph was awarded 3 days detention and the forfeiture of one day’s pay for being absent without leave for 21 hours 29 minutes on 8th March 1941. He was promoted to Sergeant on 8th November 1941 and embarked from Canada on 13th December 1941 arriving in England on 26th December 1941. Joseph was killed in a flying accident on 7th May 1943.
Sergeant Joseph Milton Lorraine Charbonneau, age 24, serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force was buried in consecrated ground in Pershore Cemetery on 11th May 1942. The ceremony was performed by the Reverend J.B. McHugh, R.A.F. Station, Pershore.
