William Chappel was born at Umballa, India, the second son of H. E. Chappel, Esq., Director in the Indian Telegraph Service, of Bedford. He entered the School House in the First Form in January, 1906, and rose to the Third Form before he left in December, 1908, to go as a day boy at Bedford. When he left he was the most promising gymnast, shot and mathematician amongst the smaller boys. At Bedford he became Head of House and Captain of the Boat Club. At 17 he took a commission in the D.C.L.I. and went to India. He was promoted to Lieutenant in December last, and then transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in Egypt. He was always high-spirited and daring and loved adventure. He was accidentally killed while flying while at Aboukir in April just after his 19th birthday.
