King George’s Durbar Medal (1911). Served in the South African Campaign and France (1915-1917). Mentioned in Despatches.
Athelstan Chamberlayne was killed in action at Ahnai Tangi, Waziristan on 14th January 1920 leading the 2/76th Punjabis of which Regiment he was Acting Lieutenant Colonel in command. In the war diary of the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons a Major A. Chamberlayne is recorded as Second in Command 11th Battalion Border Regiment on 13th July 1916. They had left England in October 1915 on board ‘The City of Chester’ from Southampton. There is a memorial to him at St Denys, Stanford-in-the-Vale, Oxfordshire.
