CARTLAND George Trevor

Appears in the Worcester/Worcestershire Roll of Honour Book for army casualties located in Worcester Cathedral.

George Cartland was born on 5th January 1893.  He was educated at Worthing and then at Winchester from where he entered Sandhurst in 1911.  He had a distinguished career, passing out at the head of the list and receiving the King’s Sword and Gold Medal.  He was an enthusiastic member of the Archaeological Society, several of the illustrations in Winchester: Its History, Buildings and People, issued by the society in 1913, are his work. He joined the Rifle Brigade in 1912 and went to France with them in August 1914, taking part in the retreat from Mons and the Battle of the Marne.  After a few months service on the Personal Staff he rejoined his regiment and was appointed Adjutant in September 1915, obtaining his captaincy in October 1915.  He was mentioned in despatches in 1916 and fell between Serre and near Beaumont Hamel on 1st July 1916

The inscription on Claines St John the Baptist Church Cartland Memorial reads:
IN LOVING MEMORY OF GEORGE TREVOR CARTLAND
CAPT & ADJT ST BATT RIFLE BRIGADE. KILLED IN ACTION
ON 1ST JULY 1916 BETWEEN BEAUMONT HAMEL AND SERRE.
