DURING THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919

Herbert Buttle was born in 1892 in the Evesham area.  He enlisted as Private 36226, Machine Gun Corps on 13th September 1915 in Worcester.  He served in France from July 1916 to February 1917 when he was transferred from hospital in Etaples, France to a military hospital in Orpington, Kent.  He remained in England until 23rd January 1918 after which time he was posted to India before being posted to Basra in June 1918.  He suffered extensive ill health when in Mesopotamia with admissions to hospital with sandfly fever, influenza and malaria.  Herbert was demobilized on 30th May 1919 and he died in 1926 at the age of 33.
