Whilst looking for some records of 232 Field Company Royal Engineers, l came across the record for James Butler. I was quite moved by the story because my father also served in the same Regiment. My Dad told me he was with James when he was killed. He said he was blown up with two of his mates, Jimmy and one other but l cannot recall his name. My dad, Fred Jones known as Brummie, was extremely fortunate as he sustained several shrapnel wounds whilst his two mates were sadly both killed. I have a photograph of them and Dad has written on the back ‘The three stooges’. It wasn’t long after that he was taken prisoner and finished the war in a German Prisoner War Camp in Dresden.
