The following information has been researched and transcribed by The Black Country Society:
John Bury lived at 68 Enville Street. Stourbridge, and attended Oldswinford Church of England School. Before the war he worked for Nickolls and Perks, the wine and spirits merchant. He enlisted in the Worcestershire Yeomanry and was sent out to Gallipoli in 1915. There were few battles as such at this stage of the campaign but conditions for warfare were atrocious. The danger from snipers and shells was constant and disease was an additional hazard after September. Trooper John Bury was seriously wounded at some point in the campaign and taken by sea to a military hospital at Alexandria. He died of wounds aged 26 on the 2nd October 1915. His name is commemorated on the Stourbridge, St. Thomas’s church, Methodist church and Oldswinford Church of England school memorials.
