Further Information About BURFORD Frederick
Frederick Burford was the son of John and Elizabeth Burford of Wollescote and attended Wollescote school. He enlisted in the Medical Corps and by 1918 was serving in 142nd Field Ambulance Company which was operating with the 3rd Division. They were engaged in the northern sector of the Somme battlefield and took part in the memorable opening battle of the Advance to Victory on the 21st August. German resistance was fierce but the battle was a striking success for the Allies. Among the many casualties, however, was Private Frederick Burford who was killed in action.
