Further Information About BULLOCK Charles
Charles Bullock was born in 1894 in Wichenford, one of six children of William and Elizabeth who had married in 1889. On the 1911 census Charles was living at home with his parents and he was employed as a waggoner on a farm. He enlisted as a Private in the Worcestershire Regiment in 1914 and entered the theatre of war on 4th July 1915. After active service in Gallipoli he was posted to France where he later died of wounds on 15th May 1917.
United Parish Magazine, Wichenford, October 1914:
Our roll of hour of those serving is as follows:- Edward Lloyd, Charlie Bullock, Frank Hichen, George Jones-Williams, Forester Britten, Charles Britten. I have added the last two names to our roll for, although they are not strictly Parishioners, yet they are so closely connected the Parish that we all feel a real personal interest in them.
United Parish Magazine, Wichenford, February 1915:
Roll of Honour
I have several names to add to our original list of those who have volunteered for the defence and honour of our Country, I herewith give the full and revised list:- Charles Bullock 5th Worcesters (among a list totalling 22 names)
United Parish Magazine, Wichenford, October 1915:
Charlie Bullock has been in the thick of it in Gallipoli; but he writes very cheerfully.
United Parish Magazine, Wichenford, July 1917:
The War has taken further toll from us. Pte. Charles Bullock has paid the full penalty and made the supreme sacrifice. He must take a high place on our Roll of Honour, for he was the very first volunteer from the parish in August, 1914. He spent some strenuous months in Gallipoli, where he was stricken with sickness and severely wounded. In one of the gallant charges of the Worcesters he met a Turkish bayonet as he jumped m into the enemy trench. It was a bad wound and kept him in hospital for nearly a year. At one time it seemed most unlikely that he should ever join up again, but nursing and nature fitted him up again and he was enabled to go to France towards the end of last year. In the recent great advance he took his part, and was so severely wounded that he died in a field hospital and is buried on the battlefield. There was a large congregation at the Memorial Service, and much sympathy has been shown to his bereaved family. R.I.P.
