Bromsgrove, Droitwich and Redditch Weekly Messenger, October 1915:
“KILLED WHILE GALLANTLY LEADING HIS MEN.”
A letter from his colonel states that Lieutenant Leslie Brooks, 4th West Yorks (attached to 2nd Lincolns), whose death was recorded last week, was killed while gallantly leading his men in the charge in the great Action in France on Sept. 25th. The deceased officer was the youngest son of Mr John Boultbee Brooks, J.P., and Mrs Brooks of Finstall Park, Bromsgrove. He was born March 27th, 1892, and was educated at Uppingham and Clare College, Cambridge. Upon leaving the University he engaged in the business in Birmingham of which his father was the founder, but a few months later, when war broke out, he decided to join the army, and was granted a commission early in September, 1914. He was married 17th November, 1914, to Blanche, elder daughter of Mr Arthur J. Birley, of Thornton-in-Craven, Yorkshire. Lieutenant Brooks obtained his promotion as Lieutenant in April of this year and went to France in May.
