Ernest Bowsher was born in Beckford in 1895. He enlisted as Private 131698, Army Service Corps on the 15th October 1915 at Grove Park. On his attestation form he gave his place of birth as Beckford near Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, his age as 20 years 1 month and his occupation as a Chauffeur. On the 4th May 1917 Ernest was admitted to the Western General Hospital at Cardiff with a gunshot wound to his left leg with a fractured tibia. He was discharged as no longer physically fit for war service on the 6th June 1918 when he was described as 5 feet 7½ inches tall with brown hair, brown eyes and a sallow complexion. He was awarded a Silver war Badge in 1918 and post war the 1915 Star, the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.
