Hampton Man Killed In Action
Mrs. A. Boswell, of 7, New-road, Great Hampton, received official intimation from the War Office on Monday, stating that her husband, Pte. Alfred Boswell, of the Royal Warwicks, was killed in action on August 21. He would have been 31 years of age on August 29. On Thursday morning Mrs. Boswell received the following letter:- “Royal Warwicks, B.E.F., 8-9-18. Dear Madam. – I very much regret to inform you your husband, Pte. 50209 A. Boswell, was killed in action on 21.8.18. Pte. Boswell, was a very popular fellow and respected by all who know him in his company. In action he acted as a brave and fearless soldier, doing his duty to the last. His end was sudden and glorious. On behalf of the company I beg to offer you my sincere sympathy in your terrible trouble. – Yours faithfully, E. Kelly, C.O.” The deceased soldier joined the Worcestershire Regiment on May 29, 1916, going to France in the following September. He was wounded in October, 1917, and after being in hospital in England for a time he returned to France last Good Friday. He was transferred to the Royal Warwicks last April. He was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. John Boswell, of 34, West-street, Evesham, and leaves a wife and two young children, for whom much sympathy is felt. He was formerly in the employ of Mr. W. White, builder, Great Hampton. His brother, Pte. Tom Boswell, of the Ox. and Bucks Light Infantry, was killed in action two years ago last March, and a younger brother, Pte. Frank Boswell, of the Leicesters, is now serving in France.
Alfred married Annie Sabina Clements in 1909. He was the son of John Whyte and Elizabeth Boswell (nee Grinnell) who were married in 1874.
