DIED OF WOUNDS
Corporal George Bateman, of the Herefordshire Regiment, has died of wounds. He was the husband of Mrs Mollie Bateman, of 94 Vines Lane, Droitwich, and respected in the spa by a large circle of friends. Corpl. Bateman suffered a gunshot wound in the chest in July and died in hospital. Accounts of his death have been sent in letters to his wife from two padres – one his own regimental padre and the other one at the hospital.
It is reported that “while reconnoitring with another lad for a patrol during the night, they met an enemy patrol with the same intention. Corporal Bateman received his wound in the ensuing short action.
Corporal Bateman was buried with seven other comrades and Mrs, Bateman is assured that their graves are being kept in good order.
Corporal Bateman, aged 28, had been in the army more than 4 years. He had been married nearly 2½ years. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Bateman, of The Vines, Droitwich, and at one time was employed as a decorator. He was educated at St Peter’s Boys’ School and was a former member of the choir of St Augustine’s Church, Dodderhill.
Two of his brothers, Private William Bateman, aged 30, and Private John Bateman, aged 20, are serving with the Worcestershire Regiment in Burma.
Mrs Bateman, daughter of Mrs Parkyn, of Sidcup, Kent, has two brothers in the Services – Petty Officer Alan Parkyn, R.N., and Sgt. Norman Parkyn, who is in this country after being wounded.
