A letter from Ernest’s mother, Mrs E. Bate, 56 Pedmore Rd, Lye, Stourbridge dated 13th February 1950 can be found within war records held at Worcestershire Archives requesting that his name be added to the county roll of honour.  The letter states that Corporal Ernest Bate, RAF VR, service no 1873678, died on 9th September 1944 and he was her only son.

The following information has been researched by The Black Country Society:
Ernest Bate enlisted in the Royal Air Force and after D-Day he was with 5203 Airfield Construction Squadron in France and was probably engaged in the Normandy campaign and its follow up.
