On the 1911 census Samuel Henry Barrett, born Tenbury, Worcestershire, was serving as a shoemaker in the Worcestershire Regiment with the rank of Sergeant.

Samuel Barrett enlisted in the Worcestershire Regiment on the 20th December 1895. On his attestation form he gave his place of birth as Hanley Village, Tenbury, Worcestershire, his age as 19 years 6 months and his occupation as a Shoemaker. He was 5 feet 6 inches tall with blue eyes, brown hair and a fresh complexion. Samuel served at home until 17th March 1900 when he was posted overseas to serve in South Africa during the Boer War. He returned home in April 1903 and remained on home service until 21st January 1913 when he was posted to serve in Egypt until October 1914 when he returned home in preparation to join the British Expeditionary Force in France where he served until the 10th December 1917. Samuel was discharged from the army on the 16th January 1918 on termination of his 2nd period of engagement.
