Further Information About BARRATT Owen William

HMHS (His Majesty’s Hospital Ship) Dover Castle was launched on 4th February 1904 as SS Dover.  She was a steamship built in Glasgow by Barclay Curle & Company as a combined passenger and cargo ship for the Union-Castle Mail Steamship Company of London.  She was requisitioned during World War 1 for use as a British hospital ship.

On 26th May 1917 she was 50 miles north of Bone sailing from Malta to Gibraltar when she was torpedoed by German U-boat UC-67, killing seven stokers.  The captain and a small volunteer crew attempted to save the ship whilst the wounded and the remainder of the crew were evacuated onto HMS Cameleon.  An hour later HMHS Dover was struck by a second torpedo causing her to sink just 3 minutes later.  Everyone on the ship was saved with the exception of the seven stokers killed by the first torpedo.

Owen Barratt has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on Tower Hill Memorial, surname spelt Barrett.
