Further Information About BAKER George Stanley Charles
George Baker was born in 1896 and he attended Bromsgrove School from 1908-1912. In October 1914 he obtained a commission but after serving for a month in France he was wounded with a piece of shrapnel through his lung and returned home in June 1915. On recovery he was attached to the Royal Berkshire Regiment before rejoining his own regiment in September as a bombing officer. During bombing practice on the Isle of Wight, a bomb thrown by a young soldier failed to clear the parapet. George Baker tried to throw the bomb from the ditch but it exploded in his hand killing him instantly.
