Further Information About BAKER Francis William
Francis attended Worcester Royal Grammar School from 1934 to 1937. As the pilot of a Lancaster bomber he was flying his first mission with his squadron as part of a force of nearly 350 Lancaster’s sent to bomb a German tank depot at Mailly-Le-Camp. The pathfinders were delayed and with no marking the bombers were forced to circuit the area allowing the German fighters time to arrive. Forty two aircraft comprising more than 10% of the force were shot down during the raid including 5 of the 17 aircraft from 460 Squadron that went on the mission.
