Was in France August, 1914, with Lady Dudley’s Hospital – then from April 1915, till his death at Gavrelle with the Hood Battalion Royal Naval Division.

Donald Frank Bailey was born at Richmond Surrey on 11th August 1893, the son of John and Elizabeth Bailey. John was a solicitor. Donald was educated at Uppingham School. He was a medical student at St Bartholomew’s Hospital London from 1912 to 1914, leaving the hospital to serve with a Public Schools Battalion with Lady Dudley’s Hospital in France from August 1914 to April 1915. On 11th May 1915 Donald enlisted in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve as an Ordinary Seaman, service No Z/1763. His next of kin was his mother, Elizabeth Wenham, The Vicarage, Builth Wells, Brecon, Wales, later of: c/o Miss McIntosh, Matron’s House, St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London EC. He was commissioned on 30th September 1915 and drafted to the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on 5th December 1915, joining Hood Battalion at Mudros on 8th January 1916. Donald was posted wounded and missing, assumed killed in action on 23rd April 1917.

Donald Bailey has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on the Arras Memorial.
