William Joseph Arnold was born on 5th July 1895.  He enlisted as Gunner 55586 in the Royal Garrison Artillery on 23rd November 1914 at Birmingham.  On his attestation paper he gave his age as 19 years 4 months and 16 days, his address as 2 Victoria Terrace, Duncombe Street, Wollaston, Stourbridge, Worcestershire, his occupation as a Glass Decorator and his next of kin as his mother, Jane Elizabeth Arnold of the same address. He was 5 feet 11¼ inches tall.

William remained on homes service until he was posted overseas, arriving in France on 28th August 1915.  He remained overseas with the British Expeditionary Force until 16th June 1918, returning to England on 17th June 1918.  During his time abroad he was promoted to Bombardier/Corporal.  He was discharged on 19th February 1919.

The death of William J. Arnold aged 27 is registered in the June Quarter 1923 under the Stourbridge Registration District.
