Further Information About ARNOLD Cyril

On 20th September 1943 HMS Lagan was escorting a convoy in the North Atlantic when she was attacked by the German submarine U-270.  The torpedo struck the ship in the stern causing severe damage.  The U-boat was chased away by depth charges from the Canadian destroyer HMS Gatineau and the badly damaged frigate was towed into a UK port where she was declared a total loss.  Twenty eight of her crew members were either killed or missing following the U-boat attack.

Cyril Arnold has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
