Dennis Armitage was born on the 28th March 1912 in Little Hulton, Bolton Lancashire and he attended Malvern College from July 1926 to 1930. After learning to fly in 1934 at the Lancashire Aero Club at Woodford, Cheshire, he joined the Royal Air force Volunteer Reserve on its formation in 1936. He was called up on the 1st September 1939 and commissioned to 266 Squadron at Sutton Bridge. On the 3rd August 1940 he was appointed ‘A’ Flight Commander. Leaving 266 Squadron in May 1941, he was awarded the DFC (gazetted 18th July 1941) for service with his squadron. On the 20th June 1941 as Acting Squadron Leader he took command of 129 Squadron. He was shot down over Boulogne on the 21st September 1941 and after baling out he was captured by the enemy and taken prisoner of war (PoW No 3800). Dennis Armitage died on the 5th March 2004.
