Charles Appleton was born at Ballincolig, Ireland in 1906. He joined the Royal Air Force on probation in 1927 becoming a Pilot Officer in 1928. Rising through the ranks, at the outbreak of war in 1939 he was in command of No 77 (Bomber) Squadron. He was mentioned in despatches and awarded the DFC (Distinguished Flying Cross) in 1940 and further promoted until he reached the rank of Group Captain in 1942. On the 12th August 1944 he was pilot of Hawker Typhoon ZY-G MN928 when he was shot down by flak near Flers.
